Interview with Session Guitarist Tony Savarino
We spent some time hanging out with professional session guitarist Tony Savarino, who shared insights from his 40 years of experience.
Tony’s band The Savtones recently released their rendition of “I Run to You” which features Tony Savarino’s wife, Kiilian Carcosa, playing on her first Savtones recording.
Thanks so much for joining us today Tony. Tell our readers a little bit more about you.
I am a seasoned guitarist, educator, and music director based in Boston, known for my versatile and dynamic playing across a wide range of genres, including blues, rock, jazz, funk, and heavy metal. With over 10 years of experience teaching at the Berklee Aspire Five-Week Summer Program, I’ve had the privilege of mentoring the next generation of musicians while continuing to build my career both in the recording studio and on stage.
Can you share with us how The Savtones’ recent release, I Run to You, came about?
This was originally a duet by country legends Marty Stuart and Connie Smith, we recorded “I Run to You” in 2011 on Stuart’s album *Ghost Train: The Studio B Sessions*. The song reflects the deep personal and professional bond between Stuart and Smith, who are married in real life. Known for its strong harmonies and emotional connection, we blended traditional country sounds with heartfelt lyrics, celebrating its authenticity and the genuine chemistry between the artists.
Our instrumental treatment of this classic is perfect for a drive through the high desert, an intimate gathering of friends and family, or as the ideal backdrop for a special moment with someone special.
You’ve had an incredible 40 years in the music industry, tell us a few highlights and achievements that you are proud of.
My work as a guitarist has led to collaborations with a variety of artists and bands, including:
* Garvy J. and the Secret Pockets of Hope and Resistance – An eclectic Boston-based band where my guitar work contributed to their unique sound.
* Ruby Rose Fox – I’ve played on recordings and live performances for this award-winning indie-pop artist, bringing my signature style to her cinematic music.
* Black Fortress of Opium – A project blending alternative rock with Middle Eastern influences, where I’ve added my atmospheric and dynamic guitar playing.
I’m also a sought-after session guitarist, with credits on several notable recordings, such as:
* TM Stevens – Contributed guitar tracks to the legendary bassist’s projects, known for his work with icons like James Brown, Miles Davis, and Steve Vai.
* Marco Giovino – Recorded with the accomplished drummer and producer, recognized for his work with Robert Plant and Norah Jones.
* Martin Bisi – Collaborated with the legendary producer, famous for his work with Sonic Youth, Swans, and Herbie Hancock.
In addition to my work as a guitarist, I serve as the Music Director for Tech Tackles Cancer, a philanthropic event that combines my artistry with my passion for giving back.
My skills have earned me recognition in publications like Vintage Guitar Magazine and Guitar World, where my playing and gear expertise have been featured. As an educator, I’m also an official transcriber for Duke Levine’s Patreon, providing accurate and insightful transcriptions of Levine’s intricate guitar work.
